Can Hormonal Contraceptives Ever Harm Your Chances Of Becoming Pregnant?

fertility, contraceptive, family planning, reproductive health

Women below the age of 30 are incredibly fertile because this is the peak of their ability to get pregnant.

A lot of women still ask whether using hormonal contraceptives will negatively affect their chances of getting pregnant in the future. Fortunately, they don’t affect fertility at all.

Reversible contraceptive methods will protect you against pregnancy while you’re using them. But in regards to long-term effects on your fertility, contraception will not harm your chances of getting pregnant when you stop using it.

Let’s take a closer look at each contraceptive method’s effect on fertility and menstrual cycle after you’ve stopped using them.

Pills

The pill doesn’t affect fertility in the long run, no matter how long you use them. In fact, a study shows that “the longer the women used birth control pills, the more likely they were to become pregnant within six months or a year of stopping use of the pills.”

The menstrual cycle, however, may take three to twelve months before it returns to normal.

Injectables

It may take up to a year and a half for the menstrual cycle to return to normal after discontinuing the use of injectables. However, it doesn’t affect fertility and women may already get pregnant even before the menstrual cycle returns to normal.

Implants

Implants don’t affect long-term fertility. Once the implant is removed, normal fertility and menstrual cycle returns almost immediately.
