Smell Your Way To Orgasm: How The Sense Of Smell Affects Sexual Experience

Sex is a sensual experience, and it’s actually believed that the brain is the most erogenous part of the body. Men get turned on by what they see, while women are turned on by what they hear. With the sense of touch, partners get to enjoy different sexual activities. But did you know that your sense of smell also plays an important part in sex?

The sense of smell is often overlooked and rarely considered when thinking about ways to spice up your sex life, but it’s also worth to think about next time you have sex.

In a study led by Johanna Bendas at the Technical University of Dresden in Germany, they discovered that those with a keener sense of smell say that they enjoy their sex lives more.

The results revealed that women with a better sense of smell achieve orgasm about 60 percent of the time, while those with least sensitive noses reach climax around 17 percent of the time.

In a different study, researchers found that men with a poor sense of smell have fewer sexual partners compared to those with more sensitive noses. Further research is needed to have actual clearer reasons for this.

Bendas and her team found no link between the sensitivity of the participants’ sense of smell and their sexual desire or sexual performance. However, the researchers suggest that sexual arousal could be increased because “the perception of body odors such as vaginal fluids, sperm and sweat seems to enrich the sexual experience.”

Of course, the research didn’t include other external factors, which could also affect a person’s sexual experience. The findings only show the connection between the sense of smell and sexual experience — that doesn’t mean that people with sinus problems or difficulties with their sense of smell cannot have a pleasurable sex life anymore!
