Why am I so horny? — What you should know about high sex drive

Libido or sex drive refers to a person’s overall desire, emotion, and mental energy for engaging in sexual activities. It’s usually affected by three different major factors: biological, psychological, and social.

It’s hard to say what the normal level of libido is since it varies from person to person. However, there are such things as high and low libido.

What can be considered “too high”?

Though you may just shrug having high libido as something that can be “cured” by having a few more sexual activities than normal, it potentially can become a problem once it goes out of control.

There’s a condition known as hypersexuality or out of control sexual behavior (OCSB). Signs of having hypersexuality include:

  • Sexual behavior that negatively affects other areas of your life, including work, health, relationships, and more.
  • Being secretive about your sexual behavior
  • Being too dependent on your sexual behavior.
  • Tried to limit or stop having too much sexual activities but failed.
  • Using sexual activities as a means of escaping problems.
  • Doesn’t feel contented when sexual activities are substituted with other types of activities.

If you are in a relationship, having too much libido may create problems, especially when your and your partner’s libidos levels don’t match.

Causes of high libido

There’s no definite cause of having high libido, however, there are a lot of factors that affect the sex drive of a person. They include:

  • Age – this affects the hormonal changes of a person, and hormones continuously affect a person’s libido throughout their life, for better or for worse.
  • Physical health status – healthier and physically fit people are more likely to engage in sexual activities and enjoy orgasms.
  • Mental health status – stress levels affect libido. Some may feel low sexual desire, while some may seek more in order to relieve stress.
  • Relationship status – having an intimate relationship with a sexual partner can boost one’s sexual desires.
  • Medications – certain medications may affect hormones, which can result in changing levels of libido.
  • Alcohol, and other substance use – alcohol is known to increase libido in the short run, but can definitely decrease sexual performance, arousal and satisfaction in the long run. Other stimulant drugs may also increase sexual desires.

Lowering your libido

If you’re someone who worries that their sex drive is higher than normal, there are ways that can help you lower your libido. Sexual behavior is a very personal matter and seeking help in resolving sexual issues may not be as easy, but remember that you’re not alone and there’s a proper treatment that is suitable for you.

Here are some of the ways you can address your sexual issues:

  • Talking therapy – a counselor or psychiatrist can help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and desires, and they can help you manage your sexual desires.
  • Distractions by doing other things you enjoy – this is to help you channel all of your energy to other things that are far from sexual activities.
  • Understand your relationship – syncing your libido with your partner’s may prove to be difficult at first and may cause issues in your relationship when you ask for sex. Try doing other things that show your care for them first without having sex, so they will more likely agree to have sex.
  • Medications – If all else fails, consult your doctor about other kinds of treatment. Certain medications can help you lower your libido.

High libido isn’t that much of an issue as long as the person can control their urges. Living with this condition isn’t something to worry about, as long as it doesn’t affect the other aspects of one’s life. Sexual issues can be addressed and remember that professional help is always available.
