Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

premenstrual dysphoric disoder, PDD, premenstrual syndrome, PMS

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is sometimes similar to premenstrual syndrome (PMS), but often times more severe and includes more emotional and behavioral symptoms. Women who experience PMS and PMDD generally have the same symptoms, but a small percentage of women who have PMDD also suffer from other symptoms such as:

  • extreme anxiety
  • breast tenderness
  • severe moodiness
  • anger and irritation
  • sadness and despair
  • intense muscle pain
  • fatigue
  • lack of interest in favorite activities

PMDD can sometimes disrupt your work or daily activities, and damage your relationships with other people. It’s not a disease and can be treated to calm and minimize severe symptoms and hormone changes. Getting regular exercise, having relaxing activities, and avoiding over-consumption of foods and drinks that have sugar, salt, caffeine, and alcohol may help you with PMDD. Consult with your healthcare provider for available treatment if you feel like you may be experiencing these symptoms.
